A former university professor, Britt has published over 100 academic and popular science papers and served as an editor for mycological and entomological research journals, as well as mushroom guidebooks.

A passionate advocate for all things fungal, Britt Bunyard has delivered more than 250 invited lectures to audiences across North America and beyond. His expertise has been featured on BBC World Service’s Newshour, NPR’s All Things Considered, PBS’s NOVA and Wisconsin Foodie television programs, and he has been quoted in major publications such as Discover magazine, The Atlantic, National Geographic, and many more.


Britt has collected fungi and lectured throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Annually, he leads mycological expeditions worldwide, including one documented in the film “Look Down Not Up” (2022). He is also the author of several notable books, including The Little Book of Fungi (2024), The Lives of Fungi (2022), Amanitas of North America (2020), and The Beginner’s Guide to Mushrooms (2021).


Since 2014, Britt Bunyard has served as the Executive Director of the Telluride Mushroom Festival and is a prominent member of several mycological societies. In recognition of his contributions to amateur mycology, he was awarded the “Gary Lincoff Award for Contributions to Amateur Mycology” in 2021.
